Introduction – Armazém das Artes Carmelita

Antonio Gerbase was born in 1951 in Porto Alegre. Reserved, unpretentious, but in full artistic effervescence, Antonio Gerbase divides his days between Porto Alegre and Geneva, in addition to traveling to several continents for his activity as a consultant in International Public Health. The landscapes of these places, sensations of the cities, people and animals are present in Gerbase’s work, dedicated to watercolours, woodcuts, lithography, metal engraving, iPad Art as well as photography. The artist has works sold in Switzerland, France, Italy, Norway and Brazil.

Gerbase’s important career in medicine began in Porto Alegre, in 1974. He also worked with the Brazilian Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organization until 1990. Between 1991 and 1993, he was a public health fellow at the Johns School of Public Health. Hopkins University in Baltimore, United States. From 1994 to 2013 he was a medical offcier at the World Health Organization in Geneva. Since 2013, he has been a consultant in International Public Health.

When asked when medicine and public health resemble art, Antonio Gerbase answers: “Creativity and new approaches are fundamental to deal with a specific situation in the context of scientific evidence. The way of doing, the way of convincing, an “aesthetically harmonious” approach that ensures an alliance with the patient or with those responsible for public health, requires more than scientific evidence, without giving up on it”.

On the other hand, Antonio Gerbase continues: “The alternation between Art and Public Health has a “rest at work” effect, as the skills required, the process and the final product are diverse. When starting a new project in one, having exhausted itself in the other, the feeling is of freedom and renewed enthusiasm, whether to start an engraving of a desert landscape, or to implement research on new diagnostic tests for STIs.
